Know what you are getting yourself into.......

The Australian Cattle Dog dates back to the early 1800s. Traditional herding breeds could not handle the cattle that were being raised in Australia and there was a need for a more hardy, energetic and smart herding dog. The resulting dog, while small in stature, is fearless when herding livestock and is well-suited for Australia’s rough terrain.

Australian Cattle Dogs are not your everyday dog. They were bred to herd cattle, and they are extremely strong, energetic, and smart. They also have a very strong personality and in order to be happy, will need an owner who is just as determined at they are.   They are obedient, but because of their strong will, can be trying. They want to please you, but they also think for themselves.  ACDs need to be exercised both physically and mentally.  They thrive in working environments, and if they aren't given a 'job' they will make their own up.  This breed also needs obedience training.

Australian Cattle Dogs bond closely with their owners.  Once you have earned it, they become a remarkably loyal companion. For this reason, they do not like to be left alone for hours at a time. They are protective of their family and property, and some can be particularly suspicious of strangers, so early socialization is important.

They are a medium size breed.  The male stand 18" to 20" at the shoulder, the female is slightly smaller at 17"-19". Average weight ranges from 33 to 50 lbs. There are two main colours, blue and red. Variations to these colours include mottling or speckling.     To read the official Canadian Kennel Club standard please click on this link - CKC ACD Standard.
